- Insect Life Cycles: We were so excited to release our adult Painted Lady butterflies and adult Ladybugs outside in our courtyard on Monday morning. They completed their final stage of complete metamorphosis.
- Plant Life Cycles: Our Cosmos flower plants and Basil herbs now have roots, stems, and a few leaves. They are growing taller each day.
- Portabella Mushrooms: Our mushroom fungus kit now has many white strands stretching across the top of the soil.
- Life Cycle of the Strawberry Plant: “Red, Ripe Strawberries”
- “Cinco de Mayo: Learning about Cinco de Mayo festive traditions on Thursday was fun! This Mexican holiday is celebrated on May 5th each year and honors Mexico’s military victory in Puebla, Mexico over France in 1862.
*Special Events
- Dr. Cool and Pride's Good Character Assembly: Thanks to our fantastic PTO, we had an energetic, interactive assembly about having good character. This talented group also has a television program on PBS called Dr. Cool & Pride: The Big Show. We learned about being “resilient” and treating others the way we want to be treated!
- Teacher Appreciation Week: Thank you to our wonderful PTO and amazing parent volunteers. Teachers were treated to many wonderful, thoughtful, and tasty surprises this week in our teachers' lounge. I really appreciate all of your support, kindness, and creativity!
*Reminders, Updates, and Upcoming Events
- Indian Trail PTO Family Bingo Night: TODAY, Friday, May 6th, our fabulous PTO invites Indian Trail families for an evening of fun to play Bingo at school in the big gym from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
- Library Books: School library books are due by next Friday, May 13th.
- School Supply Kit Orders for Second Grade: School supply kit orders for the next school year in second grade are due by next Friday, May 13th. If you would like to place an order with our PTO, please order online from our PTO website or in the front office at school.
- Hand Wipes and Tissues: Thank you so much to the Licup, Walter, and Wandycz families for making donations of tissues and wipes this week!
- Ice Cream Day: Students will have the opportunity to purchase an ice cream/frozen treat on Wednesday, May 18th during lunch for $2.00.
- Box-Tops: Please send Box-Tops to school with your child to help our PTO earn additional funds. Each Box-Top is worth ten cents. The current PTO Box-Top classroom collection will end on Friday, May 20th. - Early Dismissal: Students will be dismissed at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 27th.

- No School/Memorial Day: We do not have school on Monday, May 30th in honor of Memorial Day.
JUNE
- Heller Nature Center Visit: Thanks to our supportive PTO, the first grade classes will be going to Heller Nature Center for a morning lesson to enhance our life science studies about insects on Thursday, June 2nd. We will be staying together as a whole class. Unfortunately chaperones will not be needed, since we are only having one brief guided lesson with a naturalist and teacher, instead of a full field trip day. Thank you for your understanding!
- Early Dismissal: Students will be dismissed at 1:40 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8th.

- Last Day/Early Dismissal: Students will be dismissed at 1:40 p.m. on Thursday, June 9th, our last day of first grade together.
