Dear Families,
Today your child has his/her Daily News Writing Journal inside his/her blue Home Folder. Students will be writing and illustrating in this book at the end of most school days. Students may choose to write about things that have happened during the school day. Its purpose is to encourage conversation at home about things we are learning and doing at school. Please have your child read you what he/she has written about the day's activities and have a discussion. Keep in mind that most children will use their own developmental or ”brave” spelling. Students are encouraged to sound out words and write the words down as they hear them. In the beginning, some children will only feel comfortable writing a few words. This is developmentally appropriate and acceptable. As the year progresses, students will begin to write longer entries, and their spelling will become more conventional. Early in the school year, it is acceptable for students to write about lunch, recess, and specials. Later in the school year, we will have students write about something we learned or did together in our classroom.
*If your child has NOT completed his/her Daily News writing and/or illustrating at school, please have your child complete it at home for HOMEWORK.
Please initial the bottom of the page after your child shares his/her completed Daily News journal entry with you. We will be checking to make sure that the students are completing and sharing their journals at home.
1. The Daily News Writing Journals need to be brought back to school the next day.
2. Parents' initials written on the page will indicate that the journal entry has been checked for completion, shared with families, and discussed at home.
It is so exciting to watch the students progress. Because we will write in these books almost every day, it is imperative for your child to remember to bring it back to school, packed inside his/her blue Home Folder.
Thank you so much for your help and cooperation!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Heidi VanderVere
