*Homework Responsibilities
- Daily News Journal Writing: Please remember to continue to have your child complete, read, share, and discuss his/her Daily News Journal writing and colored illustration each day. After he/she reads, shares, and discusses information about his/her school day, please initial the page. If your child’s Daily News journal writing/illustration is not done, have your child complete it at home.
- Reading Homework Books: Your child has been bringing homework books home each night to read at his/her independent reading level. Homework books come home every day to help your child practice reinforcing his/her reading strategies and skills. These books should be easy for your child to read, practicing good reading accuracy, fluency, and appropriate expression. Please have your child read out loud to you each night. Then ask him/her some comprehension questions and discuss the book. Enjoy sharing these books together! If the book comes with word cards, please have your child read the word cards first, next read and discuss the book, and then reread the word cards again for a second time. The books and cards should be returned in the plastic bag the next day, so your child can exchange them for new books and cards. If your child is reading a longer book without word cards, please have your child read out loud from the book and discuss their reading each day until he/she finishes it.
- 'Words Their Way' Word Study Homework: Students have different Word Sort words to study, practice, and learn each week. They will get new Word Sorts on Mondays and will have 'word study' homework Mondays through Thursdays, with check-up assessments on Fridays. Our next assessment on the second set of word study words will be next Friday, October 16th.
- Raz-Kids Reading Website: On Monday your child brought home his/her individual Raz-Kids reading website enrollment information on a light blue note in his/her blue Home Folder. Please help enroll your child if you have not already enrolled him/her and have him/her practice on this reading website to help strengthen his/her reading comprehension as a part of your child's weekly homework routine. Your child needs to read a story first and then take the comprehension quiz to check for understanding. Your child should NOT be “listening” to the stories, because we are using this particular website to help focus on strengthening his/her reading comprehension, not listening comprehension. Students are leveled at their independent reading level and should be able to work on this website independently or with minimal assistance. *If your child makes errors on his/her quiz, he/she needs to continue to reread the story and retake the quiz until ALL answers are correct and accurate.
- XtraMath Homework: On Wednesday your child brought home his/her XtraMath website enrollment information on a yellow note in his/her blue Home Folder. Please help enroll your child and have him/her practice on this math website as a part of your child's weekly first grade homework routine. This consistent math computation practice will help increase your child's accuracy and speed in math. Thank you to the families who have already started using this math website.
