Indian Trail School Step-Up Day:
Step-Up Day is TOMORROW, Wednesday, June 7th. First grade students will be spending some time with our wonderful second grade team of teachers tomorrow morning and learning some information about their next school year as second grade students. Students will not know their individual classroom placements until the official class placements are posted in August.
Thank you so much for a wonderful school year in first grade! I have really enjoyed working with your children. They have become successful readers, expressive writers, strategic mathematicians, and inquisitive scientists/researchers. They have developed good work and listening skills. This year could not have been as successful without continued encouragement and help at home. We have learned a lot and grown throughout the school year. I will really miss your children!
I would like to thank you for all of your support, assistance, and time throughout the school year. We have had great Math Center volunteers including Mrs. Beall, Mrs. Borre, Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Deganus, Mr. & Mrs. Gamson, Mrs. Lichtman, Mrs. Metnick, Ms. Muller, Mrs. Mykolyshyn, Mrs. Palmer, and Mrs. Sussholz. These volunteers worked with small groups of students and helped us practice our math skills by using a variety of math activities and games. Thank you to Mrs. Lichtman for coming in to do a neat flower bulb planting activity for us to observe their continued growth and change all school year. We also had two nice creative art presentations and activities from our fine arts volunteers, Mrs. Gamson and Mrs. Palmer, who enlightened our class with the works and styles of Georgia O’Keeffe and Norman Rockwell followed by fun activities. We have had a fantastic room parent, Mrs. Lichtman, who helped organize and plan both enjoyable celebrations with help and donations from additional volunteer parents. I would also like to thank all the dedicated parents who have volunteered and helped with all of the different PTO sponsored school activities.
Please continue to read at home with your child daily. We have had a lot of enjoyment discussing quality literature in class and your child will have much that he/she can share with you. I strongly encourage participation in the summer reading program at the Highland Park Public Library. It has wonderful opportunities and incentives for continued reading growth and development! Writing notes, postcards, letters, a journal, emails, texts, picture captions, grocery lists, a diary, or creative stories at home can also be fun. It would be beneficial for your child to continue practicing addition and subtraction math facts (including the learned 36 Math Fixers), telling time, using number patterns, measuring, counting money, playing math games, etc. Practicing math skills on DreamBox, Front Row, and XtraMath websites would help with using problem solving strategies and accuracy. Reading and taking comprehension quizzes on the Raz-Kids website through June would also be beneficial.
I will be teaching first grade again next year in the same classroom. Please keep in touch and take care. Have an exciting, fun filled summer with your family and friends!
